Lisa Hopkins: Mosaics & Memory Boxes
Day of the Dead Skull Series
This series of mosaics was inspired by the Mexican festival Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). On November 1st, communities celebrate the dead with lively parties, decorations, food & drink. The celebrations serve to recognise that death is a natural part of the human journey and also to allow the dead to become part of the community again, without sadness or mourning. Skulls and skeletons are the most familiar symbol of this festival and appear everywhere as masks, dolls and even candied sweets.
